Carmella brings Ashraya to Brisbane

Posted On: Sun, 2008-04-06 23:58 by sitapati

Australian singer, Carmella Baynie, whose first solo CD, Song to the Earth, was released to much critical acclaim throughout Australasia, is performing her latest album, Ashraya, in concert in Brisbane at 7pm, in the Ann St Presbyterian Church Hall, Saturday, 26th April 2008. She’s also presenting a Voice in Yoga Workshop the following day.

“We’re delighted Carmella is performing Ashraya in Brisbane. Ashraya means shelter,” says Sita-pati Das, director of Atma Yoga. “Carmella is classically trained in western and eastern singing, and her ability to combine this naturally, shines through to a variety of audiences. Her voice is powerful, transportive, and angelic.”

Carmella has sung solo in a variety of settings – from ancient cathedrals to sacred temples – from Australia to India. Her repertoire includes performances with the likes of:

  • Eartha Kitt, best known for her role as catwoman
  • colourful singer and composer, Afro Moses O’Jah
  • Prayers by Women, classical singer Karnamrita Dasi
  • India-Jiva, popular music chanters

Sita-pati Das said: “Carmella’s unique sound combines her love of sacred music from the East and West with an enchanting marriage of styles encompassing renaissance Church music and traditional Indian devotional, choral, and contemporary.

“She’ll bring with her the Bhakti Raga ensemble of celebrated instrumentalists playing sitar, tabla, dilruba, banjo and harmonium.

“Carmella and the Bhakti Raga’s recent sell-out concerts in Sydney and Byron Bay are testament to their breathtaking performances blending Eastern and Western music cultures.”

An acclaimed singing teacher, choir director, yoga instructor and group facilitator, Carmella will be presenting Voice in Yoga - a dynamic workshop on the discovery of the natural voice in union with mind, body and spirit.

Mr Das said: “This unique workshop offers a melding of ancient yogic traditions with contemporary holistic sound healing, deep meditation and exploration into eastern and western vocal techniques. Our yoga students are really looking forward to the session.”

The workshop is at 11am on Sunday, 27th April at the Atma Yoga studio.

Tickets for these events are available from Govinda’s Restaurant (0400 362 588) and Rocking Horse Records (07 3229 5360).
