Whey is the Way! (Protein powder redux)

With apologies to all you pasty-skinned, calcium-deficient vegans out there ("I keed, I keed!"):

Drops of nectar from the Vaisnava Body Building Group on Facebook.

Whey protein, made from cow's milk, is the best source of protein for the human body, according to present nutritional and sports science.

Whey protein powder (isolate and concentrate) is a byproduct of cheese production. Milk is separated into curds and whey using rennet. The whey is then dried under a low temperature and turned to a powder.

Ajita Krsna points out that the rennet used in commercial cheese production is commonly made by killing small calves, then grinding up their fourth stomach. Cheese made using this rennet is not considered offerable or consumable by devotees. Instead, those devotees who do use commercial cheeses look for ones made using "vegetarian rennet", typically chemical or microbial in origin.

There are no "vegetarian" whey powders, but what we're looking for here is a "kosher whey powder" (any Jewish body builders in the house?). According to kosher dietary laws meat and milk cannot be mixed, so kosher milk products are also "Vaisnava bonafide".

US Premium whey protein isolate turns out to fit the bill. It's available in Australia, free postage, and costs only $38/kg for an order of 4kg. That's very economical. At my local organics store whey protein isolate is $54/kg in the bulk bin, and GNC, etc. carry branded protein powders for $60+ for 750g.

Manigriva, from Melbourne, pointed out Nutiva Hemp Protein Powder.

That's one for all you vegans out there, and it's also got some serious counter-cultural cred (check out The Hemp Revolution on Google Video). It has 37% protein (compared to whey protein isolate's 93%), and the bioavailability of that protein is lower than that of whey, but it's hemp man! Green all the way through.

A number of people have asked me about the "Vedic Mass" protein powder that features as the picture for the Vaisnava Bodybuilding Group. No, I didn't photoshop it. It's real. I found it by googling "Vedic Bodybuilding" as an image search.

It's made by Vedic Biolabs, in Bangalore, India. They also make "Vedic Proteen", which is a protein powder with added Ayurvedic goodness (Brahmi, Ashwagandha and Shankapushpi), and "Vedic Fat CHQ" to control weight. There are no "get immediate results from your first set within 15 minutes of taking this" claims here, it's all-Ayurvedic rasa: "Vedic Mass Builder has to be consumed for a minimum period of 3 months to get the desired results. Results vary from person to person.".

OK...

At the other end of the spectrum, here's the profile picture for an Australian body building group on Facebook.

Now that's taking it a little too far...

Concerns?

Are there any kidney or liver function concerns associated with taking whey protien supplements?

Whey Facts

Whey proteins primarily consist of α-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin. Depending on the method of manufacture and may also contain glycomacropeptides. Pro- and Anti-Whey Protein

Anti- Whey Protein supplementation:
http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/hurtful-food-how-safe-are-protein-drinks-and-powders.html

Summary:
* High protein diet contributes to renal (kidney) failure
* High protein diet causes osteoporosis, as the acidic protein requires buffering, and your body leaches calcium from your bones to do it

Pro- Whey Protein Supplementation:
http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/protein/protein-nutrition-myth-2.htm

Summary:
* Evidence of renal failure is only from studies involving subjects with pre-existing kidney problems (see here for study information that supports this)
* Leaching and Osteoporosis can be avoided by balancing the body's pH using other factors.

A rough guide is that you should take 1-1.25g of protein per lb of bodyweight (multiply your kg weight by 2.2). You should do physical exercise to utilize it, and you should be careful to keep your pH balanced. I'll write another article about pH balancing.

Thanks for that - I look

Thanks for that - I look forward to the pH article

Kosher

Haribol I would like to clarify a point about this statement, ". According to kosher dietary laws meat and milk cannot be mixed, so kosher milk products are also "Vaisnava bonafide""
Once I had a devotee debate with me that his yogurt was veggie because it contained kosher gelatin. He was thinking that kosher gelatin means kosher yogurt.

This however is not true. It was beef based kosher gelatin. (as the company told me over the phone) Cow meat that was blessed by a Rabbi, the yogurt would not be considered kosher with this ingredient, just the gelatin was kosher.

The Dairy Down Low

It turns out that what makes cheese kosher or unkosher has little to do with the tiny amount of animal stomach lining or lipase that might or might not be in your cheese and more to do with the hand that added it and mixed it in. According to Kashrut.com, to be kosher, cheese has to be made on kosher equipment by a Jewish person, and the rennet used has to come from a kosher animal killed in a kosher manner. As long as it’s a kosher animal, the tiny amount of rennet used to coagulate cheese (generally the rennet to cheese ratio is something like 1:10,000 or less) is batel, or nullified.

We do need our own term like kosher to describe our dietary restrictions (as I previously argued here). "Vaisnava Bonafide" whey protein powder is what we're after here. It should come from Herd Share or otherwise protected cows, and use non-animal rennet.

Kosher is still the best bet though, as the post goes on to say:

Despite the fact that cheese made with rennet from a kosher animal isn’t unkosher, most kosher cheese is made with microbial or “vegetable rennet”, which is comes from a mold instead of a stomach.

Ew. You know how we believe

Ew. You know how we believe that we're not our bodies... well, I'm pretty sure that guy actually *is* his body. And that's pretty much it. Creeeeeeeeepy.

Heh - of course, I'd say

Heh - of course, I'd say that we *understand* that we are not this body, but rather that we have a body. As for the picture, yeah, that looks unhealthy, and I don't mean just physically.

Kosher Whey

The whey protein powder we have here in Australia is kosher and halal approved. However it is from NZ and Australia.
