Karatal Videos
Prabhu,
All glories to your valuable and blissful service.
Your sincerity and that of the little Vaishnava are contagious.
If you ever redo your karatala videos I would like to help you with the music terminology. For example, you should demonstrate the basic karatala beat by beginning on the Long stroke (sizzle), followed by the two short ones, since the sizzle is placed on the strong down beat. The biggest tala mistake that beginners make, especially when they space out, is to revert to Short Short Long --. We've all experienced it.
One thing to consider with the Hare Krsna mantra is that the first "Hare" is on the "pick-up" and "Krsna" is on the downbeat. Therefore, when playing karatalas one should wait until the first "Krsna" to begin playing. Then it is easier to place the Long stroke (sizzle) on the beat.
Also, do you know where one can acquire karatalas that are the same pitch? And, do you know of a way to tune already cast karatalas? I have wondered if it is possible to polish the metal to fine tune them higher if desired.
You may also notice that when you play just one karatala most of the time there is dissonance even there with the overtones clashes. In buying orchestral cymbals, for example, they are very conscious of this. We might also consider ways of acquiring the ultimate tuned karatalas for the service of the Lord.
Again, I really appreciate your service and providing a forum for its expansion.
Your humble and awed servant,

Distress
Great video prabhu! I laughed out loud when I heard you describe how "distressing" kartals can be. I frequently find myself "distressed" by the volume and number of kartals being played within metres from my ears. I often have to leave certain kirtans when there is an indescrimintate non-musical kartal player. You said what I feel :). Good to know there are others that have unresolved issues, a kind of festering resentment for the uncultured and indescriminate kartal player. lol
Hare Krishna;)
